Just wrapped up penciling the Ghost short I’ve been working on, so I figured I’d memorialize this milestone with a quick post. To prove those aren’t just empty words, here are the first couple pages:

The short is eight pages - so consider those two pages my “short teaser” - which may sound lewd but really isn't. Anyway, these are done on bristol with blue Prismacolor Col-Erase pencils, just like Red Wolf Night. In real life they aren’t nearly as “contrasty” as these images - I bumped up the contrast on the scans and threw a levels adjustment on them too via Photoshop.

The next step on this project is inking. On this short I’m planning to detour a bit from my Red Wolf Night style and do the bulk of the inking with a brush. I’ve done a handful of sample sketches using brushes and I’ve grown to really like the line variation and organic quality. Oh, and as it turns out I just happen to have examples right here, these were done with a Winsor & Newton Series 7 #0 brush:

Concepts for my son’s first birthday invites...

I just picked up a #2 and #3 Winsor & Newton Series 7 to try out, so we’ll see how that goes… actually you’ll see how that goes when my inking is done! Stay tuned...
